The Doctor v64 was the first backup unit for the n64 and is still a great one at that. It is manufactured by Bung Enterprises and first debuted in January of 1997. It was used to copy and play games, not its official use of course. It could also play VCD's, CDI's and Audio Cd's. They come with a 8x to 24x cd rom (the speed varies from where you got it from). They have a paralle port on the back to upload roms and rom demos. The menu screen is driven by the control pannel on the front of the unit. The machine can be updated using new bios's found on the net, the latest is 1.80B at the time of this writing.
